Oma's Birthday Cake

So the other night, On Omas Birthday (October 3 1933) we were celebrating and having a good time. We bought a cake for her, she blew out the candals, and we ate. Boy did it tast good. We all had a slice, and then Eva and the caregiver went to the kitchen to clean up. Leon and Romana sat at the dinning room table and talked whiöe Oma and I sat on the couch in the living room right next to the cake watching TV. At once I noticed that she had grabbed a slice from the table and was munching on it, enjoying it ery much. Eva mentioned that shes not allowed to eat too much sugar, so I called over Eva and she took it away. Oma looked at me and said ''You tattle tailed on me'. She looked angriley away. I started watching TV aain when I notice4d she had crept over and snatched another piece of cake again. I called over EVa and she took it away. Oma loked at me in a pissed off maner and said ''Du hast much Verraten'' (you told on me again!) I felt bad but knew it was the best for her. I continued watching Gallileo. She had once again stollend a sliver of birthday cake and this time was eating it very fast. I called Eva over and Oma wouldnt let go of the cake. She wanted it so badley. They took it away and Oma just looked at me. I sais sorry to her and she responded ''I dont want to talk to you right now, go away. DU HAST MUCH VERRATEN''. I walked out and came back 10 minutes later and she just looked really pissed off when I entered. I felt kinda bad about the whole thing, but she got to eat the cake anyway int he days to come. Well, Im apply now to Austrian Airlines as a passanger service person, not a flight attendant. Im scared of flying. Well see what they have to offer, if I like it I might take and accept it. I got new shoes today because Joy chewed a whole in my addidas and my toes were sticking out. Joy had also stopped responding to her orders to sit and lay down, etcetera. Were gonna take her to an obediance class. Well, hope all ore doing well, and Hope your roommate Libra isnt annoying yu too much, cause I know mine is :) !!!

  1. Hi Sassi,
I'm fascinated by that expression - du hast much verraten! I wonder if that's the German version of "You ratted on me!" Anyway, I think it's kind of a mixed message to give someone a birthday cake and then not allow the guest of honor to eat as much as she likes. I can imagine that it was frustrating to have the cake so close by and then be told not to take any more. Birthday parties can be over-rated I guess.
It's a good idea to take Joy for an obedience class. I graduated from one at Montclair Adult School, you know - and I listen very well and never chew on shoes. (I have to admit that, once in a while, I do tear apart a tissue or two.) Anyway, when I'm off my leash helping Mom in the front yard, I don't even chase squirrels or run to greet other dogs passing by. Once Joy learns good behavior, everyone will be happier.
Good luck with Austrian airlines - I can't wait to see a picture of you in uniform if you decide you're able to work there. I'll be watching for more news.
Oh, by the way, we finally got a couch for the living room (we haven't had one there since Mireille & Allen left, because we moved Mom's couch into the family room and they took theirs to the new apt). It's a second hand love seat which Mom purchased at a yard sale from one of our neighbors, and I'm very happy that there is finally a place for me to nap near the front door while I watch for Mom to come home from work. It's quite comfortable, so think I'll go take a nap now.... Love you!!

  2. You’ll need a large pot, such as a soup pot (or a couscous-iere)

Cook a chopped onion in a little olive oil until the onion is translucent
Add a whole chicken cut into small pieces and liberally season with paprika. Make sure the chicken is well coated with paprika and slightly browned, then
Add a large can of chopped tomatoes, and add a few cans of water to make a liquid base. You could also add a can of vegetable or chicken broth, or a bouillon cube for extra flavor. Season with cilantro, cumin, curry, a clove or two of garlic, more paprika if needed, pepper and salt.
Then add a small head of cabbage, cut into about 8 wedges,
A pound of carrots, peeled and cut into sticks,
A few potatoes, cut into chunks and peeled,
About a pound of green beans (if desired)
Let everything cook together until the vegetables become tender
If you are not steaming couscous in the traditional way, add the list of vegetables below and continue cooking until everything is tender – then can serve it over couscous as usual.
At this point, if you are steaming the couscous over the stew, you can start prepping the couscous….. Just before you begin the first steaming of the couscous, add
One large can of chick peas, well rinsed,
Three or four zucchini, well washed and cut into chunks and
    Six or eight cubanelle/frying peppers.
You probably will have to add more water or broth to cover all the vegetables – and check the seasonings. I also add a little hot pepper or harissa (Tunisian hot pepper sauce, which is likely available in Vienna), if you have it. But, you can just make a separate hot sauce using the spicy pepper condiment and serve it on the side.
Once the stew is well cooked, add some of the broth to the prepared couscous, which will “drink” the broth and become a reddish color. Then it should be ready to serve.
Let me know how this recipe turns out if you try it. It’s for a group, obviously. Good luck!
